Breed History: The European Burmese, as its American cousins, can trace its ancestors to that one small brown kitten named Wong Mau, the first Burmese in the United States. It was from her litters that the breed began and spread to Great Britain. And then came the changes. American breeders concentrated on ridding the breed of points and bars, while the British preferred to expand the range of colors. Their first step: introducing red into the gene pool. A veritable rainbow is what they came up with. The European Burmese can be one of ten colors- six more than the American breed. In addition to the basic colors, the European has added red, cream, and tortoiseshell variations to the other colors.

The color range is not the only European change in the Burmese. It also looks a lot more Oriental than the American- with a more pointed face, slightly slanted eyes and a more delicately sculpted body.
