Breed History: Peggy Voorhees, working at the Bozeman Humane Society in Wyoming, noticed an unusual kitten among the unwanted pets left at the shelter one day in 1987. It was a charming, curly-coated calico female among a litter of normal kittens. The kitten was quickly adopted by Jeri Newman, a Montana breeder of Persians, who realized that the cute kitten had a genetic mutation for curly hair. When the kitten matured, Newman mated it with her champion black Persian. Three of the resulting kittens had their mother's curly coat, and a new breed- named for the nearby Selkirk Mountains- was in the making. After a short but intense breeding program, with outcrosses to other breeds, the Selkirk was recognized in 1990 by two American cat associations. All colors and both long- and short- hairs are allowable in the show ring.
