Breed History: Crossing a Siamese with a bi-colored American Shorthair produced the Snowshoe, a
sleek and elegant cat with the best features of both original parents. It has a lithe body
type somewhere in between the long Siamese and the stocky American Shorthair. The short,
glossy coat of a typical Snowshoe combines the point coloring of the Siamese, but with
patches of white like the American Shorthair. The distinctive white boots of the Snowshoe
have led to the nickname "silver laces".
The origins of the Snowshoe lie in Philadelphia, where Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty found three
Siamese kittens whose unusual white feet looked like little snowshoes. These beautiful
cats were mated with the Shorthairs and through continued care and discrimination, a new
breed resulted. The Snowshoe Cat, with its characteristic white mittens, was officially
recognized for championship status in 1983.
So far, only two colors have been recognized- the seal point and the blue point. White
patches must, of course, appear on the feet, with the ideal being white to the ankles in
front and white to the hocks in back, according to British breeder Pat Turner. An inverted
white V on the face is a plus, and bright, sparkling blue eyes are a requirement. |
