Breed History: Havana Browns first appeared in Great Britain in the 1950's- the result of crossing a seal point Siamese with a black Shorthair. But brown cats that could well be the ancestors of today's Havana Browns go much further back in time. The 15th century Thai book off cat poems mentions a solid brown cat. Whether this was in fact a Burmese is unclear, but there is no doubt that, even back then, people appreciated the sleek chocolate coat of a solid brown cat. Among the earliest Siamese that were imported to England were a number that were solid brown.

Although the Havana continues to be outcrossed to Siamese in Britain, this isn't allowed by the cat clubs of America, Canada, and Japan, where a less oriental type is preferred. As a consequence, the British Havana looks more like a Siamese, whereas our Havana Brown looks more like the original British product of the 1950's.
