Breed History: With its long silky coat and Siamese face and body, the beautiful Javanese has been described as a Balinese dipped in the colors of the rainbow. The colorful Javanese didn't walk out of the jungles of the Southeast Asian island of Java. Instead, it was developed by a cat fancier who mixed Siamese and Balinese strains, then added a brilliant array of point colors by breeding the resultant litters with Colorpoint Shorthairs. The name was chosen to evoke the exotic ancestry.

Javanese colors range from a red point to cream to seal to blue. Colors can be splashed on in many patterns, including tortoiseshell and lynx. But definitions and names can be confusing. Some American cat fanciers consider the Javanese a variant of the Balinese, not a separate breed. In Britain, what are called Javanese are longhaired oriental cats bred to recreate the old Angora breed. In New Zealand, cats are called Javanese only if they have spotted or self-colored coats. To make matters even more confusing, in some European countries the Javanese is known as the Mandarin Cat or the Cuckoo Cat.
