Breed History: One of the most ancient of all cats, the quiet Korat was named for a plateau in northeastern Thailand, where it is treasured for its beauty, its disposition, and as a symbol of good fortune. Although the Siamese is also a native of Thailand (formerly called Siam), the Thai people regard the Korat as their true national cat. Many say that the gift of a pair of these cats not only ensures a happy marriage but also brings prosperity and good fortune. It is called "Si-Sawat" in the Thai language, which means both "a mingled color with a smooth glossy shell" and "good luck and prosperity". Although it is very popular, it is very rare- even in Thailand.

The distinctive Korat looks something like a blue Siamese with a short, dense, glossy coat of silver-blue that is tipped with silver for a halo effect. The huge, luminous emerald green eyes of the adult "shine like dewdrops on a lotus leaf" as stated in the Thai book The Cat Book Poems. Young Korats have amber or yellow green eyes, which change to the emerald green as they age.
