The lion is huge, with a large head and a well-proportioned, muscular
body. The coat varies in color from light silvery-yellow through to deep
yellow-brown, with the underparts always lighter. The tail tip is black
and there are distinctive black patches on the ears. Male lions are blessed
with a heavy mane of gold, brown, or very dark color. Cubs are usually
spotted until they reach puberty, although they become very pale as early
as weaning. |
Habitat: Semi-desert,
grassy plains, open woodlands, thick bush. |
Habits: Hunts
by day or night. Terrestrial and territorial. |
Prey: All
types of large deer and antelope. |
Distribution: Africa
South
of the Sahara and Northwest India. |
