Sand Cat

Felis margarita
head and body 20 inches, tail 12 inches, weight 5-6 pounds
A small cat with short limbs and a broad head adorned with low-set ears and full cheeks. The coat is a sandy color, slightly darker towards the spine and lighter on the belly. Pale tabby markings are on the legs and along the flanks. The tail is ringed with a black tip. The feet have dense mats of hair hiding the pads, to protect them from the burning sand.
Habitat: Arid, sandy regions, including sand dunes covered with desert plants.
Habits: Primarily nocturnal, but also active at twilight. Terrestrial.
Prey: Jerboas, other small rodents, and small reptiles.
Distribution: North Africa and Southwest Asia.
